Everything moving on January 1, 2027, in plain terms: the coursework restructure, the shift in how fieldwork is tracked, and what supervisors owe each renewal cycle.
Highlighted row = a real change
Shaded row = no change
Here is the single fact that decides everything: which rules apply to you depends on when you submit your completed application, not when you start coursework or fieldwork. If your finished application reaches the BACB before January 1, 2027, you fall under the current standards and current forms. Submit on or after that date and the 2027 standards apply in full.
That one deadline reframes the whole conversation. The question is not “are the rules changing.” They are. The question is “will I be on this side of the line or that side.” This guide walks through what is actually changing so you can answer that for yourself or for the trainees you supervise.
- Four eligibility pathways collapse into two. Pathways 3 and 4 disappear.
- Coursework total stays at 315 hours but must be delivered across six freestanding courses.
- Fieldwork shifts from counting contacts to counting minutes.
- Supervisors must complete 4 supervision CEUs per 2-year cycle, now an explicit requirement.
- The exam does not change. The 6th edition Test Content Outline is already in effect.
01 Pathways: four become two
Today there are four ways to qualify for BCBA certification. Beginning January 1, 2027, there are two. Pathway 1 is the accredited or recognized degree route. Pathway 2 is the behavior-analytic coursework route. Pathways 3 and 4, the faculty/research and combined experience routes, are eliminated.
If you intend to apply under Pathway 3 or 4, you must submit your completed application and meet every requirement before January 1, 2027. There is no grace period after that date. Looking further out, the BACB has signaled that Pathway 2 itself goes away in 2032, which would leave the accredited-degree route as the only door in. Pathway 1’s degree requirements are not changing in 2027.
C02 Coursework: same hours, new structure
Pathway 2 (behavior-analytic coursework route)
This is the change most likely to surprise people, because the headline number does not move. The total stays at 315 instructional hours. What changes is the architecture. Under the 2027 standards, behavior-analytic content must be taught across six freestanding, standalone courses rather than distributed across a program however a department sees fit.
Two shifts inside that structure are worth flagging. Organizational Behavior Management gets its own dedicated 45-hour course covering supervision, staff training, behavioral systems analysis, and leadership, rather than being folded into other content. And cultural and contextual responsiveness is now woven directly into the Behavior Assessment and Intervention and OBM coursework. There is also a new floor on pacing: the entire coursework sequence cannot be completed in under one calendar year.
| Requirement | Current | 2027 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total instructional hours | 315 | 315 | No change |
| Course format | Content distributed across program coursework | Six freestanding standalone courses | Changed |
| Basic Principles of Behavior | Embedded content hours | 45 hrs · 1 freestanding course | New standalone |
| Theory & Philosophy | Embedded content hours | 45 hrs · 1 freestanding course | New standalone |
| Research Methods | Embedded content hours | 45 hrs · 1 freestanding course | New standalone |
| Behavior Assessment & Intervention | Embedded content hours | 90 hrs · 2 freestanding courses | New · largest block |
| Organizational Behavior Management | Folded into other content | 45 hrs · 1 freestanding course | Now dedicated course |
| Ethics in Behavior Analysis | 45 hrs | 45 hrs · 1 freestanding course | Now standalone |
| Cultural / contextual responsiveness | Not a coursework requirement | Embedded into Assessment/Intervention + OBM | New content |
| Minimum completion time | Not specified | Cannot complete in under 1 calendar year | New restriction |
| Coursework recency | Within 10 years of application | Within 10 years of application | No change |
| Grade requirement | “C” / pass or higher | “C” / pass or higher | No change |
03 Supervision & Fieldwork: a new way to count
Applies to both eligibility pathways
The required hour totals do not change. Supervised Fieldwork still asks for 2,000 hours and Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork still asks for 1,500. What changes is how you account for the work. The 2027 model shifts from contact-focused tracking to duration-focused tracking. Observations of the trainee with a client are now measured in cumulative minutes per supervisory period rather than as a count of contacts.
That is the change most likely to trip up someone mid-fieldwork. Observations logged under the current contact model may not map cleanly onto the 2027 duration standard. The monthly hour cap also rises to 160, and the 2027 verification forms are required for anyone applying after January 1, 2027. Supervisor qualifications tighten too: a supervisor certified for less than a year must receive monthly consultation from a qualified consulting supervisor.
| Element | Current (2022) | 2027 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tracking model | Contact-focused (number of contacts) | Duration-focused (time-based) | Fundamental shift |
| Supervised Fieldwork hours | 2,000 | 2,000 | No change |
| Concentrated Fieldwork hours | 1,500 | 1,500 | No change |
| Supervision % (Supervised) | 5% | 5% | No change |
| Supervision % (Concentrated) | 7.5% | 7.5% | No change |
| Max hours per supervisory period | Lower cap | 160 hours | Higher cap |
| Min hours per supervisory period | 20 | 20 | No change |
| Observation of trainee (Supervised) | Contact-based count | 60 min cumulative per period | Now by duration |
| Observation of trainee (Concentrated) | Contact-based count | 90 min cumulative per period | Now by duration |
| Individual supervision minimum | Not formalized | At least 50% individual (group ≤ 50%) | Clarified |
| Unrestricted activities minimum | Not formalized | At least 60% of total hours | Clarified |
| Supervisor qualifications | BCBA in good standing | Active BCBA, no sanctions, 1+ yr certified — OR <1 yr with monthly consultation | Tightened |
| Verification forms | 2022 Monthly / Final forms | 2027 Monthly / Final forms | New forms required |
| Supervision CEUs (maintenance) | Part of 32-CEU cycle | 4 supervision CEUs / 2-yr cycle for supervisors | Explicit requirement |
04 Maintenance: what supervisors owe each cycle
If you already hold certification, the maintenance picture is mostly stable with one explicit addition for supervisors. The 2-year recertification cycle still requires 32 CEUs, including 4 in ethics. Beginning in 2027, BCBAs who provide supervision must also complete 4 supervision-related CEUs per cycle. For a supervising BCBA, the math reads as 4 ethics plus 4 supervision plus 24 general, totaling 32 every two years.
One related update gives you flexibility. As of March 2025, the definition of an ethics CEU expanded to include content focused on cultural and contextual responsiveness, as long as most of the event centers on ethics or that responsiveness content. A brief mention of the ethics code inside an otherwise unrelated event does not qualify. This matters for how a CEU event can be labeled toward your 4 ethics credits.
Supervisor cycle at a glance
- 32 total CEUs every 2 years
- 4 must be ethics (now may include cultural/contextual responsiveness)
- 4 must be supervision, for anyone who provides supervision
- Remaining 24 are general behavior-analytic CEUs
05 What to do now
If you are a trainee
Find your line. Estimate when your completed application will reach the BACB and decide which side of January 1, 2027 you land on. If you are close, talk to your program advisor about confirming content hours per course so your coursework aligns with the 2027 structure. During the transition, track your fieldwork both ways, by contacts and by duration, so your hours hold up under whichever standard applies.
If you are a supervisor
Move your documentation to a duration-based system now rather than at the deadline. Confirm you are meeting the supervision CEU requirement each cycle. If you have been certified for less than a year, line up monthly consultation with a qualified consulting supervisor so your trainees’ hours count.
If you run a program or organization
Audit your course structure against the six-course model and the per-course hour minimums. Update fieldwork tracking tools and verification forms ahead of the switch, and brief supervisors on the duration-based observation standard before trainees start logging hours under it.
